The short answer
Yes, Invisalign can correct many overbites, especially mild to moderate ones caused mainly by tooth position. Overbites that come from the size or position of the jaws can need braces, other appliances or a combination of treatments. An orthodontic exam tells you which applies to you.
When you close your teeth together, do your upper front teeth cover too much of the lower ones? If so, you have probably wondered whether clear aligners can fix it without traditional braces. This guide explains what an overbite is, how aligners correct one, and when a different approach makes more sense. For an overview of our orthodontic care, see Invisalign and braces in Palmdale.
What is an overbite?
An overbite is the vertical overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth. Some overlap is normal. When it is excessive, it can contribute to tooth wear, irritate the gums behind the lower front teeth, or affect how your teeth work together.
An overbite is not the same as an overjet, which is when the upper front teeth stick out too far horizontally. Many people have some of both. Overbites can come from tooth position, jaw growth, genetics or a mix of these, and the right treatment depends on finding the cause rather than looking only at how the teeth appear.
How Invisalign corrects an overbite
Clear aligners move teeth in small, planned steps. For an overbite, that can mean repositioning the front teeth and changing how the upper and lower teeth meet. Your orthodontist may add attachments, small tooth-colored grips that help the aligners move specific teeth, or elastics that help guide the bite. A typical plan looks like this:
- Examination and diagnosis. Your orthodontist evaluates your teeth, bite, gums and jaw relationship.
- Digital planning. Scans, photos and appropriate X-rays are used to map the tooth movements.
- Custom aligners. You wear each set as directed, usually 20 to 22 hours a day.
- Progress checks. Regular visits confirm movement and allow adjustments.
- Retention. A retainer holds the corrected position once active treatment ends.
Which overbites suit aligners?
| Type of overbite | Usual cause | How it is often treated |
|---|---|---|
| Mild to moderate | Mainly tooth position | Often a good fit for clear aligners, sometimes with attachments or elastics |
| Moderate with crowding | Tooth position plus lack of space | Aligners or braces, depending on the movements needed |
| Severe | Often involves jaw size or position | Braces, additional appliances or combined treatment; occasionally a surgical evaluation |
A severe overbite does not automatically mean surgery. Most are managed without it, but your orthodontist has to assess the dental and skeletal factors before recommending a plan. When braces offer more control for the movements your bite needs, a good orthodontist will say so. Our guide is Invisalign worth it compares aligners and braces more broadly.
How long overbite correction takes
There is no single timeline. Duration depends on the severity of the overbite, the type of movement needed and how your teeth respond. Minor corrections can finish sooner than extensive bite changes, and your orthodontist will estimate yours after planning treatment.
Consistency matters more than anything else you control. Wearing aligners for fewer hours than prescribed can delay progress or change the outcome. Expect some pressure or soreness when starting a new set, and report anything significant or persistent.
Cost and insurance
The cost of correcting an overbite with Invisalign depends on the complexity of the case, the number of aligners, the length of treatment and any additional procedures. Ask for a written estimate that confirms whether progress visits, replacement aligners, refinements and retainers are included.
Some plans include orthodontic coverage and others limit or exclude it. Farzad Dental accepts most PPO plans and offers financing options, and our team will confirm your benefits before you start.
