Quick, painless screenings at your routine visits — because early detection saves lives.
Oral cancer is far more treatable when it's caught early — but in its earliest stages it often causes no pain and no obvious symptoms at all. That's why every comprehensive visit at Farzad Dental includes a quick, painless oral cancer screening. In just a couple of minutes, Dr. Philip Farzad checks the tissues most people never think to examine, giving you real peace of mind at our Encino office on Ventura Blvd.
Oral cancer can develop on the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, the roof or floor of the mouth, and the throat. Certain factors raise the risk — tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, and infection with HPV — but it's important to know that oral cancer can affect people with none of these risk factors, too. Because early lesions rarely hurt, most people have no idea anything is wrong, which is exactly why a professional set of eyes matters.
The reason routine screening is so powerful comes down to timing. When abnormal tissue is found and treated early, the rate of successful treatment is dramatically higher than when it's discovered later. A screening at your regular checkup costs you nothing in discomfort and only a few extra minutes, yet it's one of the most meaningful things we do to protect your long-term health. We fold it into cleanings and exams for patients across Encino, Sherman Oaks, Tarzana and the wider San Fernando Valley.
During the screening, Dr. Farzad performs a careful visual examination of your mouth, lips and throat, looking for changes in color, texture or overall tissue health. He then gently palpates the tissues of the mouth, jaw and neck, feeling for any lumps, swelling or irregularities you wouldn't notice on your own. When it's helpful, we use enhanced screening tools — advanced diagnostic technology that can highlight areas of concern not visible to the naked eye — to look a little deeper. None of it requires any special preparation on your part, and it adds only a couple of minutes to a visit you're already making for your cleaning or checkup.
If anything unusual turns up, we'll talk you through clear next steps, which may include monitoring the area, further evaluation, or a referral to a specialist for a closer look. The vast majority of findings turn out to be harmless, and catching a problem before it progresses is always the goal. Quick, painless and built into the preventive care we already provide, oral cancer screenings are available at both our Encino practice at 16661 Ventura Blvd, Suite 815 (91436) and our Palmdale office serving the Antelope Valley. If it's been a while since your last dental visit, scheduling a checkup is the simplest way to make sure this important step isn't being overlooked.
