Planning ahead? How long does Invisalign take?

Straight smile after clear aligner treatment

The short answer

At Farzad Dental, most Invisalign treatments take about 6 to 18 months. Your timeline depends on how far your teeth need to move, how they respond, and how consistently you wear your aligners. Complex cases can take longer, and refinements can add a few months.

If you are considering clear aligners, you probably want to know how long you will be wearing them. Some people need a relatively short course, while others need a year or more to correct more complex alignment or bite concerns. Understanding each stage helps you plan realistically instead of relying on someone else's experience. For details on treatment at our office, see Invisalign in Encino.

Why treatment length varies

  • Complexity of movement. Larger or more complicated movements need more aligners and more stages.
  • Bite concerns. Correcting an overbite, underbite or crossbite can extend treatment.
  • Consistent wear. Aligners only move teeth as planned when they are worn as prescribed.
  • Individual response. Teeth do not all move at the same rate.
  • Refinements. Some patients need extra aligners to fine tune the result.

This is why a general estimate online cannot replace a plan based on your own teeth and bite.

The stages of Invisalign treatment

1. Consultation and exam

We examine your teeth, bite and oral health to confirm aligners are suitable, and talk about your goals and the commitment involved. If your teeth or gums need attention first, that comes before orthodontic treatment.

2. Digital scan and planning

A digital scan, photos and any appropriate imaging are used to plan the tooth movements. The plan estimates how many stages you will need and gives you a projected timeline, and we can preview your expected result before you begin.

3. Receiving your aligners

Once your aligners are made, you get instructions for wearing and changing them. The gap between scan and delivery depends on planning and production, and we will tell you what to expect.

4. Wearing and switching aligners

Each aligner applies gentle pressure to move your teeth toward the next position, and you switch sets on the schedule we give you, typically every one to two weeks. Wear them about 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them for meals, drinks other than water, and cleaning. Do not switch early to speed things up; teeth need time to respond.

5. Progress checks and refinements

Check-ins let us confirm your teeth are moving as planned. Sometimes a tooth lags behind or needs a small extra adjustment, and we may recommend a new scan and refinement aligners. These add time but help you reach the intended result.

6. Retainers

Once your teeth reach their planned positions, a retainer keeps them there. Retention is not optional: following your retainer plan is what protects the result.

How to keep your timeline on track

The single most important habit is wearing your aligners for the prescribed hours. A few others help too:

  • Keep your aligners in their case whenever they are out of your mouth.
  • Change aligners on schedule, not early or late.
  • Keep your progress appointments.
  • Call us if an aligner is lost, cracked or stops fitting.
  • Clean your teeth before putting aligners back in after eating.

If you lose an aligner or fall behind, ask us what to do next rather than skipping ahead or doubling up.

Does Invisalign take longer than braces?

Not necessarily. Both can be effective, and neither is consistently faster. Aligners work well for many cases of crowding, gaps and selected bite problems, while braces may offer more control for certain complex movements. Ask for the expected timeline for each option that could reasonably treat your case. Our comparison Invisalign vs. braces in Encino covers the other differences.

Fitting aligners into a busy schedule

Work, school, travel and social plans do not change how fast teeth move, but they do change how easy treatment feels. Removable aligners are flexible, and that flexibility needs planning: if you snack often, attend long events or travel across time zones, you will need to keep track of wear time and cleaning. Consistency matters more than convenience.

Invisalign consultations at Farzad Dental in Encino

At our Encino office, Dr. Philip Farzad can review your orthodontic concerns, map a treatment plan from a digital scan and explain what is likely to affect your timeline, including how often you will need check-ins, whether refinements are likely, and what retention involves. If aligners are not the best fit, we also offer orthodontic services to compare.

Frequently asked questions

Can Invisalign finish in six months?
Some cases with fairly minor movement finish in around six months. More involved cases take considerably longer. We will estimate your timeline after examining your teeth and bite.
How many hours a day should I wear Invisalign?
Usually 20 to 22 hours a day. Follow the schedule we give you, because consistent wear is what moves your teeth as planned.
What happens if I forget to wear my aligners?
Missed wear time can slow your progress. Call us to ask how to get back on track rather than skipping ahead or changing aligners on your own.
Will refinement aligners make treatment longer?
They can. Refinements are extra aligners used to fine tune the result when teeth need a little more adjustment. We will explain why they are needed and how they affect your timeline.
Does Invisalign take longer for bite problems?
It can, depending on the type and severity of the problem. Some bite concerns respond well to aligners, while others need a different or more involved approach.
Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?
Yes. A retainer helps stop your teeth drifting back after active treatment, and we will give you a type and wear schedule that suit you.

Plan your timeline with confidence

Invisalign takes months for most patients, and the exact length depends on the movements needed, how your teeth respond and how consistently you wear your aligners. Progress checks, possible refinements and retention are all part of the process. An estimate based on your own teeth is far more useful than a generic number.
