Replacing one tooth? Single dental implant vs. bridge

Crown and bridge restorations at Farzad Dental in Encino

The short answer

A single implant is often the better long-term fix when the teeth on either side are healthy, because it stands on its own and replaces the root. A bridge can be the practical choice when those teeth already need crowns, or when implant surgery is not suitable. The right answer depends on your teeth, bone, health, budget and goals.

Losing a tooth changes everyday things like chewing and smiling. Once you start looking at replacements, the choice often comes down to a single dental implant or a traditional bridge. Both fill the gap, but they work differently and affect the surrounding teeth differently. Here is how they compare.

How a single dental implant works

An implant replaces a missing tooth from the root up. A small post is placed in the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone. Once healing allows, an abutment connects it to a custom crown.

The key advantage is independence. Unlike a traditional bridge, an implant does not normally require reshaping the healthy teeth beside it. It also passes chewing forces into the jawbone, which can help limit the bone loss that follows when a root is missing, though it cannot prevent every change.

Implants do require surgery and healing time, and some patients need bone grafting or other preparation first. Our page on single tooth implants covers the process.

How a traditional bridge works

A bridge places a false tooth between two crowns that sit on the neighboring teeth, called abutment teeth. Those teeth are usually reshaped to accept the crowns, and the bridge then spans the gap to restore appearance and function.

A bridge makes sense when the neighboring teeth already have large fillings or damage that would justify crowns anyway, or for patients who prefer to avoid surgery or whose bone or health makes implants less suitable. The trade off is preparing healthy teeth purely to support the bridge, and the supporting teeth need careful cleaning because the whole restoration depends on them. LifespanMany years, with maintenance and possible repairsMany years, but problems with a support tooth can mean replacement

Neither restoration is guaranteed to last a lifetime. Longevity depends on hygiene, bite forces, materials, general health and regular care.

Which offers better long-term value?

An implant usually costs more upfront because it includes surgery, the implant parts and a crown, and extra procedures can add cost or time. In return, it replaces the tooth without relying on natural teeth for support.

A bridge may involve fewer stages and is practical when the supporting teeth need crowns anyway. If either supporting tooth develops a problem, though, the whole bridge can be affected. Ask for a written estimate for each option that suits you, including any expected extra procedures and maintenance. Our guide to dental implant costs in Encino explains what goes into an implant estimate.

What decides whether you are a candidate

  • Gum health. Active gum disease should be treated before either restoration.
  • Jawbone. Implants need enough bone. Grafting can help when there is not, though not everyone needs it.
  • Neighboring teeth. Heavily filled, cracked or crowned teeth can make a bridge sensible. Healthy neighbors favor an implant.
  • Medical history. Some conditions, medications and tobacco use affect implant healing.
  • Bite. Grinding, clenching and how your teeth meet affect the forces on any restoration.

An exam, with imaging when appropriate, lets your dentist recommend based on these factors rather than giving everyone the same answer.

Insurance and financing

Coverage depends on your plan. Some policies contribute toward an implant, a bridge or related procedures; others have exclusions or limits. Ask your insurer about each option and request an itemized estimate. Farzad Dental accepts most PPO plans and offers financing options.

Frequently asked questions

Is an implant better than a bridge for one missing tooth?
An implant is often a good choice when the neighboring teeth are healthy and there is enough bone. A bridge may be better when the neighboring teeth already need crowns or surgery is not appropriate. Your exam decides it.
Does a dental bridge damage neighboring teeth?
A traditional bridge usually requires reshaping the supporting teeth to fit crowns. That is worth weighing carefully when those teeth are otherwise healthy.
Does an implant take longer than a bridge?
Usually, yes. Implant treatment includes surgery and a healing period before the final crown. A bridge can often be completed in fewer visits.
Can an implant or bridge prevent bone loss?
An implant stimulates the jawbone at the implant site, which can help limit bone loss there. A traditional bridge replaces the visible tooth but not the root.
Which is easier to clean?
Both need daily care. Implants need careful cleaning at the gumline, and bridges need cleaning under the false tooth and around the supporting crowns. We will show you the right technique.
Will insurance cover an implant or a bridge?
It depends on your plan and the treatment. Ask your insurer about benefits and exclusions for both options, and our team can help check before you decide.

Choose the replacement that fits you

An implant and a bridge can both restore a missing tooth, but they differ in how they treat the neighboring teeth, how long treatment takes, how you clean them and how they age. An implant is worth considering when preserving healthy teeth matters; a bridge is practical when the supporting teeth need work anyway.
